I’ve been a member of the Defence Forces for over 20 years, and in my opinion, the cross-border medical assistance scheme, PMAS has been the best thing brought to the table to help its members. PMAS not alone helped me they but they have helped my son also.
Let’s talk about my case first when I needed access to a consultant. I decided to reach out to Damien and his team in the PMAS office and they were there for me from day one and all I had to do was turn up. Thankfully, for me PMAS take care of all the administration and made my experience hassle free, in a very professional way. I have to say that from the first day I met the consultant to the day I received treatment, the follow ups from both PMAS and Kingsbridge have been first class. Cost free, hassle free and care with the highest standards by both Kingsbridge and PMAS.
Now, in relation to my son, who was suffering with enlarged tonsils and enlarged adenoids. This was affecting his sleep, affecting his eating, making him very hoarse and prone to throat infections. We were eventually referred to ENT through the public system. But after 6 months of no contact from anyone I rang up and was told my son would be on the waiting list and it could be up to 54 months before we could get a consultation so that speaks for itself.
I reached out to Damien and his team and asked him if they could help in any way, as we could let our son suffer any longer, as it was really affecting his wellbeing. Within 24 hours the PMAS team got back to me and said they could help. We got the referral letter sent on the 8th of December and we had a consultation the second week in January in Kingsbridge Ballykelly, and then a date set for the procedure in February. The service and the aftercare were top class in Kingsbridge.
For me it again was hassle-free and almost cost-free as I got a reimbursement from the HSE for almost all of my money back. Thankfully we now have our very happy little boy back.
I would really love to see the Department help fund PMAS in some way to allow them to cover the shortfalls for our family members. Many thanks to PMAS, Kingsbridge private hospital in Northern Ireland and ANSAC Credit Union.
